Authentication Methods

There are two methods in which an Internet connection can be established by a router. The first method is through PPPoE or Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet. This is the authentication method that is more common with most DSL providers everywhere.

It requires the use of a username and password. On the other hand, the other authentication method is via DHCP or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Simply put, DHCP does not require the user to supply a username and password while PPPoE requires them.

To do a Linksys Wireless G Router Setup, you should first set up the physical equipment and devices and then configure the router.

Linksys Wireless G Router Setup and other Customer Premise Equipment

The first thing one should do is to ensure that the customer’s broadband modem can establish an Internet connection without the router. The procedure is simple since all you have to do is power up both the modem and computer and open a web browser to check if you can open a web page or not. If the computer can’t establish an Internet connection then call the customer’s ISP for assistance.

Once an Internet connection is established then the next steps to set up a Linksys Wireless G router can be carried out. The next step is to disconnect the Ethernet cable coming from the modem that goes to the back of the computer and connect that to the router’s Internet port.

Next, take the Ethernet cable that came with the router and plug that to the back of the computer where the old Ethernet cable was once plugged in. Plug the other end of that Ethernet cable to one of the numbered ports at the back of the router.

The set up should be a cable running from the modem to the router then another cable running from the router to the computer. Once you have all the cables properly connected it’s time to check the status lights on your router. Make sure that the LED lights on the router’s front panel turn on. The next phase in the Linksys Wireless G Router Setup is to configure the wireless router.

Configuring the Router for a DHCP Connection

The next phase is to configure the wireless router. Follow the instructions below if your ISP does not require you to enter a user name and password. The configuration page is web based so the first step is to open a web browser on the computer. Type 192.168.1.1 on the browser’s address bar then hit Enter. A window will pop up and prompt you for a user name and password. Use “admin” for the user name and leave the password box blank and click OK.

The computer’s browser will then open the Linksys router’s configuration page. Change the Local IP Address field to 192.168.2.1 if the value stored there is different. Click on the Save Settings button.

Renew the computer’s IP address then access the router’s configuration page once again but this time use 192.168.2.1 as the router’s IP address. Once you’re on the configuration page again click on Status. Look at the numbers under the Internet field, which includes IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS 1, etc.

If the numbers under the Internet field are all zeros then click the DHCP Release button and then click DHCP Renew button. There should now be numbers in the Internet field by now and you should be able to access the Internet.

Configuring the Router for a PPPoE Connection

To set up your router for a PPPoE connection, click the Setup tab. Select PPPoE under the Internet Connection Type drop down menu. Enter the username and password that the ISP has supplied and then click Save Settings.

Next, click the Status tab and go down to the Internet Connection field. The Login Status at this point should be set to Disconnected. Click on the Connect button to establish an Internet connection. The other lines under the Internet Connection field should have numbers supplied in them once an Internet connection is established.

These are the basic steps to configure your Linksys router. You may have to consult your ISP or router documentation in case you encounter any error messages. All in all, the steps to do a Linksys Wireless G Router Setup are easy to understand.
